I can’t speak for Zidane/Garnet because I couldn’t get through IX, but despite the writing flaws of VIII being a little too subtle, Squall and Rinoa’s romance will be far more romantic because it was not easy. Rinoa was integral to Squall’s character growth as a person and because while they argued at first there was also mutual attraction between them though one party (obviously Squall here) didn’t exactly recognize it at first and it took some time before said party even realized that he liked her. Even then, he still has trouble making sense of what he’s feeling because he’s cut himself off from all human relationships for so long because of his internalized abandonment issues.
It’s more interesting than Yuna and Tidus because that attraction was clearly there all along and there were no obstacles between them. It just took a moment of seclusion to act on their feelings. It wasn’t anywhere close to having to go against everything he knew.
Okay…I’m gonna stop here before I start sprouting an essay on the subject.
